The transformation of materials, substances or components into new products is considered manufacturing, and as such this industry encompasses a variety of business sectors from auto, medical, aerospace, technology, energy, and robotics to food & beverage, clothing, fishing agriculture and more. Advanced Manufacturing combines new information technology with advanced machinery. Manufacturing is considered one of the country’s most critical industry sectors, and with over 400 companies on the South Shore it remains a critical driver of our local economy as well. In Massachusetts, manufacturing generates about 10% of the state’s GDP and accounts for about 6% of the total employment base with wage growth of over 27% expected over the next ten years.

Manufacturing companies use advanced production techniques to develop a wide range of products we use every day. In manufacturing you will enjoy a career in high-tech machinery and cutting edge software in a variety of in-demand markets including Medical, Information Technology, Defense and Renewable Energy. Working as part of a team in a creative, professional environment, you will earn an average yearly salary of $45,000with an Associates Degree and upwards of $75,000with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Advanced Manufacturing career opportunities require a skilled workforce with wage and compensation benefits that are outpacing those of other industries within the region. A career in manufacturing offers a variety of entry points whether you are a recent high school graduate, participated in a specialized certification program, or completed a 2-4 year college degree. In the spring of 2018 the MassHire South Shore Workforce Board established the South Shore Manufacturing Advisory Group, which consists of representatives from area manufacturers, educational institutions and industry associations.  The Advisory Group is working diligently on the implementation of a variety of action items identified in the recently completed Manufacturing on the South Shore of Massachusetts Report, which identified that the manufacturing industry sector is a significant economic engine for the South Shore.

The South Shore is home to over 400 manufacturers and the industry requires a steady pipeline of workers if it is to continue to grow and prosper.  Manufacturing jobs require a higher skill level today than in the past and wages have begun to reflect this specialization.  Workers take home an average of $20,000 more than the average non-manufacturing employee in Massachusetts as stated by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

Through a regional manufacturing training grant provided by the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development the MassHire South Shore Workforce Board has the follow two training programs available to support your workforce growth and development.

Leadership Development: Provided by Quincy College, this training is designed for entry level leaders that are seeking to be supervisors or learning about supervision, This program provides formal training and prepares individuals to supervise and manage the operations and personnel in management -level divisions. There are three Coherts opportunities with the first one running from May 2 – May 30th, on-line. Click here for additional details.

Smart Manufacturing: Provided by Cape Cod Community College, this training is a C-101 Certified Industry 4.0 Associate – Basic Operations instructor-led remote learning program. The training is targeted toward entry-level operators and fully prepares students for the manufacturing occupation. The training runs from April 28 – June 30, 2020, and will include an internship for entry level candidates. Click here for additional information.

Recent presentation on manufacturing careers at the South Shore Public Charter School.

The MassHire South Shore Workforce Board kicked-off the Nationwide Celebrate Manufacturing month with events at South Shore Vocational Technical High School and Silver Lake Regional High School on Friday, October 5th – which is Celebrate Manufacturing Day across the Country. 

The Friday morning kick-off at South Shore Vo-Tech included the official unveiling of a new video to promote the manufacturing industry in the South Shore, as well as a discussion on the various career pathway opportunities available in advanced manufacturing today.  Presentations were given by representatives of the South Shore Manufacturing Advisory Group and employees from Tech-Etch, Inc. from Plymouth and Zildjian Cymbal’s from Norwell.

The MassHire South Shore Workforce Board Manufacturing Advisory Group capped off a busy fall with numerous presentations at local schools throughout the South Shore. The consistent challenge expressed by area manufacturers throughout the region is a need to fill their expanding workforce demands to keep up with the needs of their customers, and grow their business operations.  Finding quality workers with the basic training needed to enter the company’s workforce is a challenge that the South Shore Manufacturing Advisory Group is trying to address.  Working with area Colleges and High Schools Advisory Group members are developing an after- hours curriculum for high school students, young adults and mature job seekers to prepare them with the basic skillsets necessary to embark on a career in manufacturing, as well as curriculum options that will provide individuals college credits that can be utilized towards a degree program.  We are seeking input from manufacturers on the types of training they would like to see new hires have.

Offering paid apprenticeships and internships is a great way to find new talent of all ages interested in working in the manufacturing industry.  The Advisory Group is looking to establish a data base of companies that offer these opportunities in our region so that we can effectively link area students and jobseekers interested in a manufacturing career with the opportunities available.
